DELTA and Kloosterboer build wind turbine

Two major companies in Zeeland, Kloosterboer and DELTA, have worked together to build the first wind turbine at the Kloosterboer site in Vlissingen-Oost. Construction started in May 2013 and the wind turbine has been generating green power since November of the same year.

Collaboration
Kloosterboer wants to reduce their CO2 emissions by 20% within five years.
DELTA is active in the field of wind energy and aspires to grow within this sector. They now have extensive experience in building wind turbines and find it important to serve their customers across the broadest spectrum possible. In this respect, a collaboration to establish self generating energy was the obvious choice.

What is the benefit?
Kloosterboer will be using the generated energy to power the refrigeration systems serving their cold stores. The wind turbine produces approximately 4,000 mega watt hours per year. This is equivalent to the consumption of about 1,250 households. Annually, it achieves a reduction of about 2,320 tonnes of CO2. The total CO2 savings over the lifespan of the turbine is approximately 34,800 tonnes.

Kloosterboer and sustainability
Last year, Kloosterboer received the "Lean and Green" award. It encourages companies to grow towards a higher sustainability level. John Dane, Kloosterboer's General Manager of their location in Vlissingen comments: “As market leader in the temperature controlled storage and distribution sector for food related products, we believe it is our responsibility to be a front-runner in the development of initiatives for sustainability and conducting business in a “green” manner.” The increased sustainability is achieved by using a clever combination of transportation, using more efficient methods and means of transport, reducing the energy consumption of existing cold storage facilities, the development of "green" locations and the construction of wind turbines at site in Vlissingen.

DELTA and wind energy
DELTA’s total number of wind turbines now stands at 58. This includes the 16 turbines which have been built at the recently completed wind farm in Kreekraksluis and the wind turbine at Kloosterboer.  Martin Martens,  Manager Project Development at DELTA;  “Our ambition is to increase the number of wind turbines. In this specific collaboration, the intention is to build a total of three turbines at the site in Vlissingen-Oost. This is what we will be working on in the near future!”
