CO2 reduction through the use of a barge on the Chiquita banana supply chain for Albert Heijn (2)

Bakker Barendrecht, supplier of fruit and vegetables for Albert Heijn and part of Greenyard, is joining forces with Kloosterboer and BCTN to reduce CO2 emissions per container.

Since September 30, BCTN, the largest operator of inland container terminals in the Netherlands and Belgium, and Kloosterboer, a leading logistics service provider for temperature-controlled food products in Western Europe, have been working together to transport the Chiquita bananas after the arrival of the seagoing vessel in Vlissingen per barge via the inland container terminal of BCTN in Alblasserdam. On arrival the bananas are transported by truck to the Bakker Barendrecht distribution center.

Currently, an average of 40 trucks a week drive directly from Kloosterboer Vlissingen to Bakker Barendrecht. The use of multimodal transport on this barge route benefits the environment as a CO2 reduction of more than 50% per container will be achieved.
