Largest solar plant in South Holland on Kloosterboer roof

At the start of April, the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Kloosterboer Delta Terminal at Maasvlakte was put in to operation. A total of 1800 solar panels have been fitted to this cold storage facility making it, in terms of capacity, the largest PV plant in the province of South Holland. The installation enables Kloosterboer to be self-sufficient for their energy needs.

Annual yield of 430,000 kWh
The solar panel installation has a capacity of 450 kWp with an expected annual yield of 430,000 kWh. This corresponds to the annual consumption of 130 households, saving 140 tons of CO2 on an annual basis. The energy generated is to be used almost entirely for the energy needs of the building and the associated refrigeration installations. At times when there is not any demand for electricity by the establishment itself, the power will be delivered back to the grid, for which agreements have been made with Delta NV.

Sustainability and Kloosterboer
"The solar panel installation forms part of Kloosterboer’s ambition to establish themselves as the leading sustainable logistics provider.", explains Kloosterboer management. "Kloosterboer is affiliated with the Lean & Green organisation. We run a wind turbine with a capacity of 4 MW in Vlissingen and in October 2013, we became the first cold store company in The Netherlands to be awarded the three star BREEAM-NL new construction certification. The completion of the solar panel installation is the next step in sustainability for refrigerated logistics."

Unique
Leo Euser, Branch Manager of Kloosterboer Delta Terminal comments: "It is quite unique for a commercial company like Kloosterboer to take on the full financing of such a large project themselves." Kloosterboer was guided through the entire process by Michiel van Beek from Solar Concept. He helped the company with the evaluation of the business aspects, vendor selection, contract negotiation and the engineering. Solar Century Benelux from Helmond carried out the installation of the solar panels. The professionalism and the organisation's experience helped greatly throughout the entire project.
